Keith DJ

Keith began his DJ activities at the age of 14 earliest interests centred on the freshness and ‘BIBAesque’ glamour of the 70’s but most of the music he heard was from his Fathers ‘Blue Beat’. First record heard, ‘Reach Out (I’ll be There) The Four Tops and memorably, ‘Hey Jude’ The Beatles but it was to be a few years later and a chance encounter with a record that was to change his whole perspective, ‘Innervisons’ – Stevie Wonder. Interestingly he now recalls, “How accurate was Mr. Wonder in that album?”

His first ever record was the Album, ‘Let me in Your Life’ Aretha Franklin featuring the track “’Till you come back to me”; borrowed indefinitely from his Brother, from there he was hooked.

His first serious break came in the Eighties at a local event where he first met Grooverider who promptly, ‘sorted his music out’ other local venues beckoned working with the likes of Mary Wells of the Supremes DJs Pat Sharpe, John Sachs and Mick Brown, Tony Blackburn, Steve Walsh.

Keith went on to do various Clubs throughout the eighties such Boxers, Monmatre, The Watertower, Che’s, Mega Actives, The Peoples Club, Tico’s, Studio Valbonne, Emporium and Gantons.

He started his radio activities on Whitgift Centre Radio Croydon and gravitated, towards a number of pirate Radio Stations including Horizon Radio where he was privileged enough to see and hear Paul Hardcastle’s demo…!! He also appeared on Time Radio, London Breakfast Programme and Fame FM, London.

During the mid eighties he was a Contributor on Gary Hicksons ‘ Big Beat’ Show for BBC Radio Lancashire and assisted BBC Radio 1’s Dave Pearce on his Drive Time Programme for BBC GLR London whilst being involved in the record industry as Head of Dance Music at Spartan Distribution, signing new Artistes for Distribution purposes; tracks such as the left-field Warriors Dance Label fronted by Tony Addis where SOUL II SOUL recorded and he was relaxing, he spent much of his time lounging and drinking beer’s in the DJ Box listening to Jazzie B and Trevor Nelson at London’s Dance Wicked.

Time was spent in the nineties at the respected Ichiban Records founded by Blues and Soul Supremo, John Abbey in press and promotions dealing with artists and a distribution roster that included Lonnie Liston Smith, Ben E. King and Curtis Mayfield while simultaneously holding down a weekly programme that became daily as a Radio Presenter on, WNK 103.3 North London for the station’s ‘up-front’ programme.

During the period Keith appeared at The Kat Club, Flava of ‘da Month and was involved with the event New Voices (Live Performance Artists) and appeared at Rapid Fire, JazBah®, London, Bump ‘n Hustle, Bournemouth, Jazzid Norway, The Cobden Club, The Roof Gardens, Kensington and BBC Television Centre.

During the period 1995-1999 Keith was voted into the top 15 United Kingdom DJ’s in the reader’s poll for Blues and Soul Magazine.

Today, he currently leads a reserved and sedate life.
