Clive Johns DJ

DJ Clive Johns would perhaps describe himself as a veteran we would say, in terms, he’s just started the next chapter.

Clive crafted his trade the hard way during the 80s at underground South London house parties and ‘Blues Dances or Shebeens (an import of first generation West Indians to the UK in the late 1950’s used for raising money to pay bills and ensure the survival of the culture at that material time and a clear starting point and proper musical education for many of the UK’s most credible DJ’s known in and on the circuit).

At these ‘dances’, Clive spun a heady and most seductive hedonistic cocktail of soul, funk, rare groove, early hip hop and reggae.

A flirtation on legendary pirate Starpoint FM and spots at Surrey ‘All Dayers’ (exactly what they were, All Dayers and more…) led to a meeting with Dave Morrison what transpired form this meeting was Clive's residence at Soul Survivors at the Red Eye, Lewisham which to this day he maintains was the best club he ever played at.

The Red Eye was followed by a 2 year residency alongside Dave at Paddington's Starlight Club, truly the Alpha of young London’s New Jack Swing / R n’ B nights in the 90’s.

It is duly acknowledged, Graham Davis’ / Phil Tibbert’ legendary Gulliver’s formerly based in Down Street nestled in London’s opulent Mayfair area was the root of this genre together with the Peoples Club in Praed Street, Paddington which no one who frequented the place can deny, was beyond belief in terms of the music, DJs and heart-stopping depth of delivery.

From the Starlight Club Clive moved North to Islington's Paradise Club with Dave Morrison (later the Complex) and then to Corks Wine Bar in Mayfair to establish the long running and MOBO (Music of Black Origin) award nominated "Club 8090".

While the musical style in all of Clive's post Red Eye clubs leaned more towards Hip Hop, Reggae and Swing (later R n’ B) his love of Soul, Funk and related Grooves was not diminished.

Clive later joined the DJ crew at JazBah® in 1996 where his precise attention to detail, commanding presence and exact delivery over and on the decks won him much respect.

These days Clive is currently still at large in and on the London circuit, active with residences at Corks, Mass in Brixton and Peoples Club in Holloway plus various one offs in and around London.
